Blocked Emails to Stevenson: Rerouted Na, Na, Na

The Powers of Darkness Versus The Minions of the Light:The Struggle Never Ceases

The shutdown of my email when the administration lapsed into a snit about my rhetorical style--or perhaps because I alluded to the past instance when the administration was caught out for paying itself for not teaching-- means my email below to Stevenson didn’t get through. I resend it by an alternate route. How dumb do these GK administration deep thinkers penser que je suis? If you can’t get into town on I-275, you go Dale Mabry. ldd --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Dr. Stevenson:

I have not received a telephone response from you from the message I left at your office today. I hope this behavior does not represent your customary level of courtesy to citizens who pay to run the college.

I attach an email that you did not receive because, a GK Deepthroat informed me (see attachment), you and your administrative staff have shut out my emails from the college server. I received no notification of this shut-out; I got no rationale for it. Had the GK Deepthroat not informed me via mail, I would have not known of this stealth administration trick.

This secret shut-down was neither courageous nor courteous. My mother would say that people who performed such sneak shutdown and didn’t have manners sufficient to tell me about it were raised in a barn.

To my mother's rebuke, I add add they didn't have the courage to act in public. I have always maintained to those at HCC--which is nearly everybody--who say they can't speak out against administration skullduggery that they attributed to the GK poltroons qualities they lacked. Cowards sneak around trying to knife a person in the back; brave people stand out front and speak and act for all the world to see. Up-front people have guts; sneaks don't.

In this reforwarded email, I asked that you direct your attention to my list of items for public information. Although you apparently believe you can shut down a former faculty member’s free speech and a citizen’s email access to a publicly supported institution, you cannot violate the Florida open-records law that says a citizen is entitled to public information and that the penalty for denying it is severe. Your school lawyer should be able to outline that penalty.

I have never been a felon, so that rationale won’t wash for denying me this requested public information on that score. I have merely sent a few crisp public messages about the GK administration, and you and your administration hangers-on object to the sentiments in those messages, so you shut down my email. Pinochet would have done also--the dictator who had goons kill thousands of the Disappeared--mostly young people--in Chile because he didn't like what they were saying. Dictators always try to shut up the opposition. Sometimes these appear on the public payrolls of a community college even in the United States as is now the case.

If a citizen tells the truth about how the HCC administration operates in disregard for the whole college family and principally for the convenience and profit of the GK myrmidons, GK placeholders aren’t tough enough to take the truth and shut down the college email of the citizen to avenge their pout.

Ms. Dial of the Division of Community Colleges told me she called HCC and determined that the people who can give me a rationale for this unprecedented shut down of a member of the public’s email access to a public institution are College Attorney, Martha Kohler (?). and head of Instructional Resources, Mr. Judd.

I request the individual rationales authored by these two be in writing, sent to my address below so that I can ask a couple of First-Amendment attorneys and the ACLU for review. Also as public information, I request the college attorney to cite from the Board policy manual the section that defines the level of access that the college grants the public and what restrictions the administration propaganda minions may impose of free speech in this activity.

I want to know how many times the college has performed this email extirpation against other members of the public. Those data are public information.
I ask that the college attorney give me the Florida statute’s citation dealing with shutting off email for a member of the public whose communications—few in number since my retirement seven years ago—contained no profanity or expletives and were couched in Standard English.

All of these conversations shall appear on my HCCDeepthroat.blogspot.com blog. I mounted it to feature the commentary that accompanies this extraordinary attempt of HCC’s administration to abrogate free speech and besmear academic freedom. I find it an obtuse and clumsy gesture to a citizen of the tax-paying public and a 28-year former professor of English who retired in good standing.

Fortunately, members of HCC who dare to do so can comment on the blog. There are places to do so, and the HCC quidnuncs can't determine from whence came the comments.

A copy of the person’s snail mail identifying him- or herself as GK Contact, who alerted me to the email shutdown that the college administration lacked the courtesy or public-relations aplomb to perform, appears in my blog along with other communication regarding this situation.

I infer the GK Deepthroat message came to me snail mail because of the ubiquitous fear and timidity that characterizes the the college family in its dealing with what it fears will be administration thuggery and retaliation.

I never believed these fears but believed instead that the administration consisted of a bevy of poltroons whose idea of payback is such as this: sneaky shutting off a person's emails and then skulking away bereft the guts to inform the person. What a disgrace that we taxpayers must subsidize such unlovely cowardice with the bloated salaries that the GK deadwood flatters the Board into granting--although my screaming about the GK administration's paying itself from not teaching got shut down when I was still on the scene. Score one for The Minions of the Light.

Pray assemble the public information that I have requested for me to review. I await your alerting me to its being ready. I understand that the winsome Donna is proctor for this procedure. I shall be enchanted to observe her in this role.

Dr. Stevenson:

I attach an email that I received from an anonymous GK Deep Throat a few days ago. Had I not got this email, I would not have known that the administration had gone into a tizzy and blocked my emails into the college.

Now isn’t that pretty childish of the administration? Are its minions so insecure that they can’t withstand an email from a former faculty member without going to Code Z? These victims of the fantods must be in desperate straits in the sophistication and courage departments.

I am glad nobody can trace this Deepthroat mail. I am sure my daring Deepthroat is right about retaliation for his or her speaking out. The administration will be vicious to Deepthroat. It will shut down the whistleblower's email too.

Everybody assures me that there was hope that your presidency would dilute the pathology at HCC. I infer that its not having done so to be the case, more's the pity. There’s something about the effluvium that emanates from the corridors of Gordon Keller that afflicts the inmates hunkered down there and messes up their synapses by flatlining their power to think--never robust, to be sure. Doubtless some body-snatching phenomenon that the DM Science faculty is working to untangle has been afoot for years.

Meanwhile, the stench over GK's redoubt is terrible.

I had forgotten all about GK and its bush-league Powers of Darkness in retirement. I needlepoint, reread the novels of James, go to the opera, and talk to the seagulls where I live on the Gulf of Mexico.

Darn! Now I have to strap on my Valkyrie armor again and hack my way via keyboard once more into the breach. The sea gulls are wroth at this interruption of our chat. But I can hit the ground running in resumption of fighting crime at HCC.

I was x-chromosome James Bond on the faculty for twenty-eight years. Nobody will dispute this statement. I leafleted GK with corrective memos almost daily, and nobody there would answer the phone when I called. The administration legal gun was always threatening that he was going to sue me, which circumstance brought offers of pro bono defenders of the First Amendment from the legal knighthood. You may sue a person for missives written in Standard English telling the truth, but the judge will laugh in your face.

http://www.HCCDEEPTHROAT.blogspot.com

I was hit woman for all those years in-house and will be better at the chore now with outside vantage that includes the powers of a citizen to buttress me.
In terms of the shutting me out of the HCC email system, I am sure you know that academic freedom and Constitutional free speech obtain at HCC—at least its pretense. If not, the college would become laughing stock of the educations world.

Ms. Allen is, I infer, is probably the one that my email chiefly rattled. As I recollect, she is a second-tier administrator and comes from outside the academic world to HCC from the field of commerce, hence may not have a capacious understanding of the history, reach, and generosity of academic freedom in institutions of higher learning. I heard a rumor that her previous employment was cashier at an Ace Hardware store, but I consider that information apocryphal. I trust any competent academics who may have wandered in from the outback campuses to educate the lass as needed.

And I doubt that the Board has approved this Operation Shut Down of Free Speech. A tax-supported institution should not shut out the people who pay the bills merely because citizen comment annoys unsophisticated administration recipients who may not relish citizen commentary but who scoop up nonstop and augment the bloated salaries we citizens pay them. The Board is the governor’s appointees and thus connects to political reality that the administration does not comprehend.

I have couched in Standard English my communications to HCC with no instances of profanity or what my grandchildren refer to as "potty language." My messages also contained no grammar or punctuation errors, a virtue which I cannot attribute to the communications emitting from Gordon Keller that I reviewed over my years at HCC as English professor. People used to slip illiterate GK emails under my door with the message scrawled in handwriting, "Lee, you've got to do something about this!" I infer that baleful situation still obtains.

http://www.HCCDEEPTHROAT.blogspot.com

If outside legal comment be needed to buttress free speech and the robust standing of the First Amendment at HCC, I am sure that a letter from you to the Florida Attorney General for an opinion would answer the question. All you have to ask is "Dear Attorney General: Is it ok for the GK hobbledehoys to shut down the email of a pesky citizen and former English professor whose opinion we don't like? Pinochet is our role model, and he died of old age, never punished for anything, including mass murder, never mind shutting up the opposition by hook or by crook."

The federal grants the college enjoys would probably offer elucidation on citizen rights to comment to the college without the tech department's shutting down the emails because a few fragile souls have not yet reached professional maturity. How can citizens complain, say, of your violating Title IX if they can’t get through the mainframe? And does SACs yet know of this odd outbreak of suppression of free speech at the behest of GK?

Meanwhile, here's my list of public information under the Sunshine law. The Board’s policy statements include this citizen right. A citizen does not have to explain why she wants them or to grovel in the request to obtain them in a timely fashion. A citizen gets them no questions asked. I request individual rationales authored by these two cited by the Community Colleges Association be in writing, sent to my address below so that I can ask a couple of First-Amendment attorneys and the ACLU for review.

Also as public information, I request the college attorney to cite from the Board policy manual the section that defines the level of access that the college grants the public and what restrictions the administration propaganda minions may impose of free speech in this activity.
Public Information: A copy of all communication on the subject of my e-mail's odyssey that occasioned the shutdown of my email into the college; --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A copy of the section of the Florida statutes that deals with mode of citizen input to a tax-supported educational institution and restrictions of content of input;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Citation from the Board policy manual the level of access that the college grants the public and what restrictions the administration propaganda minions may impose of free speech in this activity;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The number of times and the names of the persons against whom the GK minions have executed an email shutout in the past; --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A copy of any opinion that the college obtains from the Attorney General of the state of Florida on this issue as it applies to public institution Hillsborough Community College’s shutting out a citizen’s emails;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The name of the person who heads OTT--referred to in the Deep Throat message and who, I infer, is the head of Technology Department; I would like to review this person's employment folder as well;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A narrative of your participation in the shutting down of my email access.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A copy of the Board’s directive on my email issue; I assume such a extreme step needs Board approval; --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Florida statute citation dealing with shutting off email for a member of the public; --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The names and email addresses of the College Board member, with the chair identified as such.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A copy of the most recent SACS assessment of the college;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A list of all Federal grants enjoyed by the college. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.HCCDEEPTHROAT.blogspot.com

I trust that my GK Deepthroat, whose remarks I attach, erred in saying the college does not observe the Sunshine Law. The law enforces serious penalties for any person such as those connected with HCC who violate it by refusing to provide a citizen with public information such as that requested by me.

It occurs to me that this incident might make a good article for me to submit to college journals on speculation for publication. I doubt that many community colleges have been obtuse enough or afflicted with administrators’ suffering personality aberrations sufficient to shut down electronic free speech. This article would make lively reading, and the academic world is always curious about primitive thinking in its midst. Such data make lively derisive colloquy in the Faculty Lounge, cafeteria, halls, and mop closets.

I haven't had contact with HCC in several years. This Deepthroat distress message throws me right back into the heat of the battles that I participated in during my years at HCC in the long-running Faculty- Administration agon.

Memories, memories: My glory day was convincing enough faculty when I was president of the Faculty Union to picket Gordon Keller during a Board meeting because Dr. Shanberg wouldn't file an Affirmative Action Plan.

Dr. Shanberg stomped out of the Board meeting and shouldered his way amidst us faculty who outside in picket mode. We
faculty had to shuffle our footing, shift our picket signs to opposite shoulders, make way for him, and cease interviews with the TV stations so that we could hear the Shanberg oration. The then-president of HCC yelled at me, "All right, De Cesare! [POTTY LANGUAGE (g--dd--n it!)] You'll get your [POTTY LANGUAGE (g--dd—n)] Affirmative Action Plan!"

See, I said the administration always buckled to faculty push-back.

http://www.HCCDEEPTHROAT.blogspot.com

The picketing proved lively and set precedent at HCC for faculty fortitude. Fun was had by all, and the boundaries of free expression and academic freedom gained new luster in the GK parking lot. Never has the First Amendment had such a sprightly airing at HCC before or since. That glorious event represented one of the college's signal days. History will record so.

I mount a new blog--the third in my series--for an HCC conversation. I shall feature on the blog HCCDEEPTHROAT.blogspot.com subsequent developments on this email shutdown or other diverting matters that pop up.

I am particularly interested in the last SACS review of the college. SACS Chair G. David Armstrong, Jr. will want the hyperlink to the HCCDEEPTHROAT site so as to file the data recorded in the HCC file for SACS’s next accreditation review of HCC.

I want to comfort any of the faculty, staff, or service proletariat at HCC that GK's reputation for ability to wipe out anybody with the flick of its wrist is utter flapdoodle. It didn't wipe me out in spite of its best efforts, and I did not wait until tenure to protest evil’s wafting from GK as I scented it between classes coming from the Auschwitz-style flue pipes’ adorning the roof.

My first fight with GK came weeks after my hiring and long before I earned tenure. It concerned the administration’s not giving maids the same salary as janitors because--now listen to this--"Janitors have to climb up on ladders." I hollered Title VII, and GK buckled.

My next fight was on academic freedom. There was no Black writer in my English-department reader, so I added some handouts from Soul on Ice as supplement. Plant City Board Member Hilman Bowden hauled me before the Board because of "vulgarity" in the essays, not because of Plant City racism, of course.

But I and the Minions of Light survived that attempt at crucifixion and laughed to fight another day.

Hilman Bowden almost choked me to death hugging me at the Plant City Strawberry Festival when I recently saw him there. Standing up to GK Wizard-of-Oz power will not only make you strong; it will also make you popular.

No GK Lucco Brazzi has ever killed any faculty, staff, or service-employee proletariat. And a GK Lucco never will. One should just hold a cross before him if a Le Lucco semblable approaches in the guise of Rene Villa or Leo Diaz.

http://www.HCCDEEPTHROAT.blogspot.com

The administration huffs and puffs and then hunkers in the GK bunker, peeping out the blinds to see if the Faculty Revolution is advancing down Bayshore, over the bridge, and menacing the GK redoubt with aged faculty warriors Richard Long, Eric Joost, and Walt Ellis at the head of it troops. These Three academic King Lear Mousequeteers shall brandish their pikes and belt out The Marseilles.

PS: Since I don't see the Board names and emails on the Web site readily accessible as I was requesting even as I headed out the door into retirement from HCC, please do me the kindness to forward this message to all Board members. And please put those Board names and emails on the Web page. We citizens have a right and a duty to share our views with these representatives for oversight for citizens for the governor’s convenience. I bet they all want to hear from us. The Board always treats faculty with particular courtesy has been my experience.
