Ms. Larsen:
You have no idea how disappointed I am to read from my snail mail Deepthroat, who turned up out of the blue, a second communication after the administration shut down my email that you are participating in harassing two HCC women with courage enough to protest to the Board the outsourcing of the bookstores. The administration probably wants to throw the bookstore people into the arms of the subcontractors who have the cleaning people in their clutches currently—the ones that pay 3rd-world wages with no benefits.
Does the Board of Trustees know about this despicable conduct on yours and on other administrators’ parts? If not, I advise both book-store women this way: keep logs and record what happens that portends to the administration’s building a case against you to fire you because you dared oppose outsourcing by the administration.
I wish the administration would outsource itself. It wouldn’t be missed is my prediction.
I expect better of women than that kind of sleazy behavior, ma’am. I have worked forty-five years in the Women’s Movement to open up top jobs to women, and now that some have got there, those such as Dr. Stevenson demonstrate no better leadership morals than guys. Dr. Stevenson has been a real letdown. My analysis says she’s little better than her predecessor, Ambrose Garner, who chased women around his desk.
Stop picking on Beverly and Leann, the book-store women. I have never met these women, but if they want my help, I will do what I can. I helped Iris Willis get an attorney when Garner was sexually harassing her. Then only about six people would speak to me. No wonder the administration gets away with murder in its dealings with the rest of the college. Few have the guts to stand up and oppose the administration skullduggery. Bullies pick on the weak; they avoid people who fight back.
I know for a certainty that my Episcopalian Jesus does not like this unchristian behavior of ganging up on the little people to deprive them of their jobs and their dignity and make them cower in fear until you succeed at this evil project. I know He doesn’t. Jesus’s a buddy of mine.
I see you are on the HCC Foundation Directors roster. Please send me the address of the chair of that conglomeration. I need to contact him or her. The Foundation needs some unexpurgated data on the administration’s ethics when it comes to treating its employees like human beings. I see that the Foundation members are from some of the big-cheese outfits around town. That fact is just yummy to me. I love to interact with such Pooh Bahs to spread the word on the practice of skullduggery to trash the little people in the foundations they sit on.
Keep in mind that this is also a public information I request and from you and thus liable to the Sunshine law.
And remind Dr. Stephenson of the list of public-information materials that I have already asked of her. I haven’t heard a peep from the woman, and she has not returned my phone call. My Georgia mother would say the behavior of such person indicates being raised in a barn. The Sunshine law says Dr. Stephenson must provide these materials in a timely fashion. Her response has not been timely. Does the Board have to prompt her to do her job? Do people have to go running to the Board to get the administration to do its jobs and act in a decent fashion befitting the bloated salaries that we taxpayers provide?
And ask Dr. Stephenson to add the employment file of the guy involved with questionable computer use about the time I retired and to inform me by carrier pigeon since email seems to be a no-man’s land when to come to GK to review the stack of stuff I have asked for. Florida public-records law mandates this access to information I requested for my review or a written reason for refusal.
As I recall, this questionable-computer-use fellow was the administrator whom Dr. Stephenson brought with her when she got her job, the one whom she created a job for at the taxpayers’ expense, and about whom there was a question about use of the computer on college time, and also about whom I could not confirm ten years ago the NOVA degree he claimed to have with the NOVA records department. I am ready to take up that investigation again now that y’all quidnuncs have shut me out of the emails. That kind of behavior tells me that there is skullduggery big-time going on at GK that needs a public airing.
Given the ethical swamp waters surrounding GK, that you in the administration thuggery corps have the nerve now to harass two women from the HCC Book Stores and to plot ways to catch them in little nit-picking contretemps to terminate them with the GK legal hired guns because they dared to protest to the Board their administration- proposed loss of jobs to subcontracting banditos is an outrage against free speech and a crime that demonstrates the lack of basic civility that glues civilization together. This treatment of low-on-the-food-chain employees is the kind of stuff that guarantees people who do it a slot in hell in the hottest part. How do I know that? Jesus told me.
The quidnuncs with whom you and other administrative deadwood have shut out my emails from the college to prevent my saying anything about administration hijinks is not going to prevent my getting out the word. This is America, and we have free speech—even in the badlands of the HCC administration education-world bullies. Trust me to exercise it by hook or by crook.
In colleges and universities especially, you must be able to outtalk people, not shut them out of the email apparatus of a tax-supported institution because a person has verbally bested you. Being able to verbally defend your position with effect is what education is all about. People who can reason and speak well don’t have to shut down emails to shut the contrary voice up. Those skills are what people in higher education are supposed to command: they are able to debate, confute, refute, gainsay, one-up, dazzle, thwart—all with words—on the email or anywhere.
You don’t resort to email shut downs, take your marbles, and go into hunker-down mode in you GK tree house. Keep in mind that you don’t own that building. The taxpayers do. You are just passing through as will others after you. God willing, some decent ones will occupy GK sooner or later. I hope to live to see the day.
Your behavior in this little playpen confrontation illustrates the truth of my contention that academic weaklings go into administration while smart people go into teaching. I believe my having said that is why you shut me down—not the spam excuse that you have ginned up after I used email data off HCC’s web site as my address list. The tech department messed up and left the email information on the Web and now has the effrontery to blame their incompetence on me and shut me down as cover up for mess-ups as usual at GK.
Tell the GK mainframe cowboys that they might as well open the email gates for me. I didn’t graduate Phi Beta Kappa summa cum laude from a before-grade-inflation NY university for nothing. I can think up ways to get around dummies. I did for the 28 years I served as Professor of English at Dale Mabry.
I believe in the Constitution’s promise of free speech, especially in a college with pretensions of academic freedom. The Constitution doesn’t exempt spoiled, silly administrators at HCC. It applies to them too.
Without free speech, we don’t have democracy. Y’all GK despots would probably like that, but that situation is not to be.

ADMINISTRATIVE
OFFICES
HCC administrators have made sure that your voice is not heard amongst HCC rank-and file faculty and staff.
This past year, the administration has subtly pushed to eliminate hard-earned employees’ rights and benefits.
This past November, (If I gave you exact date/time/location my identity would be revealed; I would face immediate dismissal.)
HCC vice president Barbara Larson while speaking to
(Blacked out) said the following, quote: “I can see those two bookstore workers who spoke up at the board meeting are going to be a big problem. Start documenting things against them.” Then said the following, quote: “I’m already on it.”
Barbara Larson was most likely referring to the two HCC bookstore supervisors (Beverly Muller and Leann Horwood) who spoke up against outsourcing HCC bookstore operations
board meeting.
I enclosed for you a copy of 11/15/06 board meeting
I’ve been with HCC for many, many years, and have witnessed administrators and their eager and willing department heads punish those who speak a differing voice. I fear that those two courageous bookstore supervisors will be punished for speaking out.
Back in 1999, Gwendolyn Stephenson, Sue Flaig and a bevy of managers, made up false charges against a HCC bookstore supervisor Miriam Del Rio. The bogus charges were later dropped (Blacked out) hired attorney John W. Bakas, Jr.), but she was deliberately harassed and eventually had to file a claim with the EEOC. copies of internal HCC documents on that matter.
The lengths to which HCC administrators go to eliminate human decency.
Please post this letter on your blog for others to see.
